Galder’s Passionate Blog

What's the point of living if you can't love or hate?

Coming back from holidays is tough. Very tough.

I’ve just come back from a holiday in Les Saintes, Guadeloupe where I practiced windsurf (or planche à voile like the french call it) for the first time ever with UCPA and it was absolutely amazing. Windsurf was physically demanding, specially in your arms, but fun and there was an amazing ambient in the UCPA centre with people up for having some fun pretty much every evening. Coming back from holiday was tough though.

First of all, yesterday morning, after landing back in Paris-Orly, I missed the train I was supposed to take from Paris to Geneva which meant that due to the funny train tariff I had, I had to buy a brand new train ticket to be able to get back to Switzerland. Not happy :(. Thanks to RER B train line for making me lose my train.

Secondly, once I arrived home, I checked my email and found out that my blog had started to get spammed heavily with bogus blog comments. I immediately installed a Akismet spam filter that hopefully will catch these annoying comments. On the “positive” side, my blog is at least popular with spammers ;). Thanks for your support!

Thirdly, before leaving on vacation, I cleanly managed to upgrade my work laptop from Fedora 9 to Fedora 10. This morning, the first thing I did when I got back to work was to do a full system update and when I rebooted the system after successfully finishing the update, I got a nasty suprise. GRUB wouldn’t load and instead was showing a black screen with GRUB word written in white at the top left. After a few minutes of panic, I used another computer and quickly found a solution for it in the Fedora forums. To sum up, if this ever happens to you, just do the following:

  1. Boot up the install disk in rescue mode to get a prompt.
  2. Execute:

    1
    2

     chroot /mnt/sysimage
     grub-install /dev/sda
  3. Restart from local drive and GRUB menu should be back.

Finally, some good news. If you have been following this blog, you’ll have seen that I’ve added a Gallery section. Within it, you can now find the album for the Les Saintes, Guadeloupe trip that I did last week.

  1. How warm was it there? The pics look awesome!

  2. A lot warmer than here, that’s for sure! Temperatures where something between 25C and 35C which is 77F to 95F. Just perfect.

Before leaving the island, the temperature was actually 35C (95F) and when I got back to Paris it was 1C (33F), so quite a shock!
